Gut health is critical for our physical and mental wellbeing. That’s one of the reasons probiotics have become extremely popular in the last decade. However, not all probiotics are created equal – especially if you have digestive conditions. That’s where Saccharomyces boulardii stands out for being especially gut-friendly.

What is the S. Boulardii Probiotic?

The Saccharomyces boulardii probiotic is a specific strain of yeast discovered in the 1920s by French microbiologist Henry Boulard (hence its name).

Since that time, more than 200 studies have been conducted to learn more about what makes S. boulardii such a powerful probiotic strain.

Saccharomyces Boulardii Benefits and Uses

It turns out that s. boulardii has very specific qualities which make it ideal for a variety of health conditions linked to gut flora balance. Here are a few of the saccharomyces boulardii uses that may benefit you:

Acne and Skin Benefits

Because S. boulardii has strong anti-inflammatory benefits (source), it can be a key component of treating acne and other inflammatory skin conditions. Other research specifically shows that S. boulardii can clear away acne.

Healing Digestive Conditions

S. boulardii has been shown to be an effective remedy for a variety of digestive conditions, including:

  • Crohn’s disease or Leaky Gut Syndrome (source)
  • H. pylori infections (source)
  • IBS (source)
  • SIBO (source)
  • Antibiotic associated diarrhea (source)
  • Traveler’s diarrhea (source)

Candida Benefits

Because S. boulardii is technically a strain of yeast, not bacteria, it’s especially beneficial for keeping candida overgrowth in check. It’s also a great probiotic to take when you have to take antibiotics, since S. boulardii isn’t killed by antibiotics.

If you have digestive issues or candida overgrowth when taking antibiotics, try using a Saccharomyces boulardii supplement during your course of antibiotics.

Bioavailability and Stability

Unlike some other probiotics, S. boulardii is highly bioavailable (surviving through the digestive tract) and is also very shelf stable. This means when you use a Saccharomyces boulardii supplement, you can be sure you’re getting the powerful benefits you want.

What’s the Right Saccharomyces Boulardii Dosage?

Saccharomyces boulardii is naturally found in ripe fruits like lychee and grapes. But chances are you’ll need a high-quality s. boulardii supplement like this one to get a beneficial dose of this probiotic.

This is the brand of s. boulardii that I trust and use myself.

Note: Even though S. boulardii is less likely to cause bloating and discomfort, it’s best to start small and slowly increase your dose of s. boulardii.

You may need to open the capsule and start with as little as ¼ capsule per day at first. If you find you tolerate it well, slowly increase until you reach a full dose (see below).

The Most Effective Saccharomyces Boulardii Dosage

For chronic conditions, the optimal S. boulardii dosage for adults is 1,000 mg daily until the issue is resolved (usually 4-8 weeks). This translates to roughly 5-10 billion CFUs of Saccharomyces boulardii per day. It can be taken in 2-4 divided doses if needed.

Maintenance dosage for adults would be 250 mg of S. boulardii daily.
